Soak the rice and urad dal in water for at least 4 hours.
Drain the water and grind the soaked rice and urad dal into a coarse paste.
Heat oil in a pan and add the cumin seeds, mustard seeds, split black gram, split Bengal gram and fenugreek seeds.
When the seeds start to splutter, add the asafoetida and turmeric powder.
Add the ground paste and mix well.
Add the grated coconut and mix well.
Add the chilli powder and salt to taste.
Cook the mixture on low heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Serve hot with chutney or pickle.
