split pigeon peas (toor dal)

1 cup

large tomatoes, chopped

cumin seeds

1 teaspoon

mustard seeds

1 teaspoon

turmeric powder

1 teaspoon

red chili powder

1 teaspoon

coriander powder

1 teaspoon

garam masala

1 teaspoon

salt

1 teaspoon

oil

2 tablespoons

ginger

1 teaspoon

garlic paste

green chilies, chopped

1 teaspoon

lemon juice

1 teaspoon

Directions

Step 1:

Soak the toor dal in water for 30 minutes.

Step 2:

Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds and mustard seeds.

Step 3:

When the seeds start to splutter, add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies.

Step 4:

Add the chopped tomatoes and cook for a few minutes.

Step 5:

Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt.

Step 6:

Add the soaked toor dal and 2 cups of water.

Step 7:

Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until the dal is cooked.

Step 8:

Add the cilantro and lemon juice.

Step 9:

Serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
