Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida, and cumin seeds.
When the seeds splutter, add tomatoes and tamarind paste and cook until the tomatoes soften.
Add turmeric powder, black pepper, salt, and water. Bring it to boil.
Simmer for 15 minutes. Garnish it with coriander leaves.
Serve the rasam soup hot as an appetizer or with rice.
