Wash and peel the avarakkai. Cut into small pieces.
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, urad dal, chana dal, cumin seeds, split black gram, split Bengal gram and asafoetida.
When the seeds start to splutter, add the chopped green chillies and turmeric powder.
Add the avarakkai pieces and sauté for a few minutes.
Add salt to taste and mix well.
Cover and cook for 10 minutes or until the avarakkai is cooked.
Add the grated coconut and mix well.
Serve hot with steamed rice.
