Green tea has always been associated with detoxification and weight loss. 

Anaemia

Green tea contains a pigment named epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which binds iron in the blood by reducing the iron content in our body. 

Drug interactions

Caffeine present in green tea is responsible for stimulating the nervous system. However, excessive intake of caffeine can be detrimental. 

Triggers Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD)

Drinking green tea should be avoided by the IBD patients because the polyphenols present in green tea are known to induce inflammatory processes and aggravate the severity of symptoms that afflict IBD patients.

Harmful During Pregnancy 

Excessive green tea consumption during pregnancy may impact both the mother and the foetus. 

Low potassium Levels 

Potassium plays a key role in carrying out multiple functions of the body. 

Liver toxicity

Excess consumption of green tea makes the liver release hormones to metabolise, which disrupts the load in the liver and damages smooth functioning.

Affects Thyroid Function 

Consuming excess green tea releases higher concentrations of caffeine and catechins. Impairs the thyroid functions by blocking and balancing the thyroid hormones, causing many disorders like abnormal weight gain, weight loss, and temperature sensitivity.

 Impacts Bone Strength

Certain compounds in green tea inhibit the absorption of calcium. Thus, excessive intake of green tea results in the deterioration of bone health and might cause osteoporosis in sensitive individuals.

Anxiety and Insomnia 

Caffeine in green tea is antithetical to sleep and stops the release of certain sleep-inducing hormones like melatonin.

Induce Bleeding

The caffeine in green tea decreases the levels of fibrinogen in the body. This protein helps to clot our blood and also prevents oxidation leading to thinner blood consistency.

Causes Heartburn

Again, caffeine’s laxative properties stimulate the gastrointestinal acids and enhance the muscle contractions in the food pipe.
