10 Causes of Diabetic Stomach Pain

By Dr. Nikhil Eric Saldanha

The following are some of the diabetes stomach pain causes that diabetics should look into.

Dietary Changes

Diabetics eat a varied diet rich in fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, and other foods. Consuming these fibers in large quantities can cause bloating and gas production in the stomach.

Diabetes Medication

Various medications are prescribed by various healthcare professionals to regulate blood sugar levels in your body. It can, however, disrupt your gut health.

Injectables

Some injectable diabetic medications may cause abdominal discomfort. Furthermore, hypoglycemia (low sugar level) can occur with a high dose of insulin or by skipping meals, leading to serious complications.

Diabetic Ketoacidosis

It occurs when blood sugar levels are abnormally high, and ketones force the kidneys to excrete glucose and water. It's a serious fatal consequence of type 1 diabetes and is caused by an insulin shortage.

High Blood Sugar or Hyperglycemia

Hyperglycemia can have a severe impact on the elderly or undiagnosed diabetes patients. It's your body's reaction to a lack of insulin. Symptoms include abdominal pain or nausea, vomiting, and dehydration.

Low Blood Sugar or Hypoglycemia

When you skip meals while taking anti-diabetic meds, hypoglycemia might occur. It disrupts the delicate balance between food and insulin synthesis, causing blood sugar levels to drop.

Heartburn and Diabetes

Heartburn can be a problem for diabetics. When stomach acid returns to the food pipe, it causes an abdominal problem. Diabetes, on the other hand, is mostly caused by nerve damage at the food pipe-to-stomach junction.

Bacterial Infections

Food from the stomach moves slowly in diabetes, allowing bacteria to thrive. As a result, your stomach acid may be unable to protect you from bacterial illnesses.

Diabetic Constipation

One of the most prevalent side effects of diabetes is constipation. Stool frequency is reduced as a result. It also includes firm stools, feelings of incomplete emptying, and other symptoms.

Diabetic Diarrhoea

Diabetic diarrhoea is characterised by frequent watery stools. It causes gastrointestinal discomfort. It is a long-term diabetic problem that can occur for a variety of reasons.
