Lost 21 kg in 7 months
My weight has been yo-yo-ing for the last 10 years. I would gain weight and then lose it,” says Suhel Mukherjee, a Kolkata-based business consultant. “Things got scary when it hit the 105-kg mark. That’s when I started considering weight-loss programmes,” he says.
Suhel tried several weight-loss apps like Google Fit and Endomondo but none lived up to his expectations. “They weren’t personalised,” he says. “And they didn’t have data on Indian food,” he adds.
Suhel then came across the HealthifyMe app. “I saw it on the app store and it had good ratings, so I downloaded it and started using it.” Unlike other fitness apps, he found that it had a personal touch. “It was great to find a human being on the other side, tracking your performance and giving recommendations,” he says.
Suhel’s case was assigned to body transformation coach Meenakshi S and diet and wellness consultant Alpa Momaya. Thanks to their efforts, his lifestyle has undergone a drastic change.
Time was when he would wake up “anytime between 7 am and 10 am”. He now gets out of bed at 6.30 am and begins his day with a glass of warm water with lime and honey. This is followed by a pre-work snack comprising protein-rich foods like egg white, followed by 45-60 minutes of weights and cardio. Breakfast is a balanced meal of carbs, protein, fruits and dairy products.
A coffee addict, Suhel was used to 7-8 shots of double espresso in a day. He has cut down drastically, trading the coffee for 2-3 cups of green tea a day. He also makes it a point to drink 4-5 litres of water during the day.
Skipping meals is also a thing of the past. He now has a healthy lunch at 1 pm and it usually comprises millets, stir-fried vegetables, salads and protein. The evening snack – at 5.30 pm – is usually fruits. This is followed by an hour-long cardio session including activities like running and swimming. He makes sure that he has a post-workout snack of egg whites and peanut butter. Dinner comprises a small portion of brown rice, vegetables and protein.
“The good thing about Suhel is that he is highly energetic,” says Meenakshi. “It helped him lose several kilograms and participate in a marathon within a few months of starting training,” she adds.
Suhel drew up a fitness target in consultation with his trainer. Last year’s target was to reach 85 kg and participate in marathons; this year he wants to drop more weight, master difficult exercises and better his marathon timing.
“Now the priority is to build lean mass. So we won’t see the drastic weight loss we saw earlier,” Meenakshi says.
Suhel is enjoying every bit of his journey of transformation with HealthifyMe. “Fitness is a continuous process,” he says. When asked about the advantages of a virtual weight-loss plan, he says, “I don’t think HealthifyMe is completely virtual. The experts are just a phone call or an SMS away. And the amount of attention I got from them was phenomenal.”
He is also enjoying the rewards of a healthy lifestyle. “I can fit into my old clothes again,” he says. “There’s been an overall lifestyle change. It helps you get into a schedule and betters your self-image. And you get a lot of attention from folks who wouldn’t give you a second look if you were overweight!”
