Have you ever been in a situation where, despite sticking to your diet and exercise plan, your weight stubbornly refuses to budge? This is a common problem many people face during the course of their weight loss programme and can be traced back to factors like unhealthy lifestyle, diet mistakes, plateauing of the metabolic rate or hormonal imbalance and medical conditions.
If you’ve ever faced a similar problem, it’s not difficult to address the issue. Read the checklist below to know where your problem lies and consult a health coach to help you overcome it.
After following a diet and exercise regime for a substantial amount of time, your body gets accustomed to the regimen causing a weight loss plateau. Under such circumstances, your health coach provides you with valuable advice – remedial measures, that are designed to stimulate your metabolism and nudge your weight down from its current level.
When clients come to us complaining that their weight hasn’t dropped, despite following a prescribed weight loss regime; one of the first things we do is re-examine their lifestyle, diet and workout routine to understand what’s causing this. A balanced diet, regular exercise, portion control, eating meals on time, stress management and adequate sleep are all integral components of an effective weight loss programme and an imbalance in any of them has the potential to throw you off your goal. Your health coach needs to know more about your lifestyle, especially if your weight shows signs of plateauing. Have an honest discussion with him/her so that the problem areas are discovered and appropriate measures are taken to resolve the same. This enables you to set out on your weight loss journey with new zeal, once again.
Hormonal imbalance or an underlying medical condition like PCOS, thyroid disorder, blood pressure or other ailments could be reasons why you’re unable to lose weight. If you happen to be diagnosed with any of these ailments, your health coach will refer to your test results and prescription and design a fitness and weight loss programme taking into account your medical condition.
I have come across several instances where clients are unable to stick to a healthy diet because of lack of time and tend to rely on ready-to-eat and processed food as a result. Some others tend to overdo it with cheat meals, which tends to throw their diet off track. If you are finding it difficult to stay off processed food and curb your cravings for cheat meals, my suggestion is that you regulate your portions so that it doesn’t end up reversing the health gains you’ve already made and your weight doesn’t end up stagnating.
If you follow the principles of healthy living like balanced diet, regular workouts, good sleep, active lifestyle, etc., the chances of you reaching a weight plateau reduces significantly. It’s always a good idea to stay in close touch with your health coach and keep him/her regularly updated about your progress. If you sense your weight is stagnating, get help—it should be easy to set right with a few corrective measures.
