The importance of the brain in the human body need not be reiterated. However, the factors affecting brain health need to be understood better. If the brain is not taken care of properly, it could lead to several ill-effects including stroke. This World Stroke Day, here are 5 tips you could follow to prevent stroke.

Keep an eye on your blood pressure

A study published in Journal of the Association of Physicians of India states that high blood pressure is the biggest contributor to the risk of stroke. Ideally, a blood pressure of less than 120/80 should be maintained. In some cases, a less aggressive goal of 140/90 could be more appropriate. This can be achieved by reducing the salt intake in your diet and avoiding high-cholesterol foods. Regular exercise will also help reduce your blood pressure.

Maintain your BMI

Another contributing factor to stroke is obesity. It is important to maintain a BMI of 23 or less. An increased amount of physical activity burns calories and reduces the risk of obesity, in turn, reducing the risk of stroke. Exercise more

While exercise contributes to weight loss, it also stands on its own as an independent factor in reducing the possibility of stroke. It is essential to exercise at moderate intensity at least five days a week. If time does not permit exclusive workout sessions, use every opportunity for physical activity. For example, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Ideally, make sure to have some level of physical activity on a daily basis.

Watch out for diabetes

High blood sugar levels cause damage to blood vessels over time. This makes it more likely for clots to form in them. If you are diabetic, use diet, exercise and the necessary medication to maintain your blood sugar levels within the recommended range. It is best to consult your doctor and act as per their advice.

Stay away from cigarettes

Smoking accelerates clot formation in more ways than one. It thickens your blood and increases the plaque buildup in the arteries. Quitting smoking will help reduce stroke risk significantly. If you are a smoker, it is highly advisable that you first reduce smoking, and then gradually quit the habit altogether.
